Google first introduced Cardboard in 2014, and at first it seemed like a bit of a joke. You fold up this piece of cardboard and strap your phone in, then hold it up to your face and you’ve got a makeshift VR headset.

I have to admit, when my little brother got me a plastic version of the google cardboard, I immediately tried out a couple of the games in the app store, finding out in the process that 1) the games are pretty average at best and 2) my gyroscope is fucked; probably from dropping the phone so much.

These little games and novelties did entertain me a little for a few hours, and I started to envision the things which should be done (not just can be: Google, we need an ingress/cardboard game!) but it was less than 24 hours before I went looking for some porn.

Setup

I’ve seen things which recommend using the VR player available in the app store, but I actually found that the standard video player worked well enough for what I wanted.

Effectively the setup is this: construct your cardboard device if assembly is needed, download your movie on your phone (Paying where needed).

Place phone inside the cardboard device and play.

The offerings

What I found was a pretty amazing disappointment. There are only a few companies which offer cardboard porn (which sounds like a fetish involving boxes, let’s face it) and what they offer is fairly narrow in scope:

Virtual Real Porn is male POV featuring hardcore, blowjobs, threesomes and group sex. There are a couple of voyeur vids which let you watch while the two girls have sex. *You feel like you are actually in the same room*.

Virtual Real Gay features tons of hot guys, with both solo, guy on guy and group experiences. Again, you feel as though you are in that person’s body… in both ways…

Badoink VR offers a very interesting selection of videos. Utilising your gyroscope, some of these videos are 180 and 360° views (you turn to your left, the video pauses and you can examine your surroundings). The pornstars are very attractive and the utilisation of binaural audio can really *convince your brain that you are the man whose POV you are experiencing* (provided you are using headphones).

The one I finally settled on was Naughty America. Again, POV from male perspective (seeing a theme here?) but the male in question doesn’t seem to do very much, mostly lying there while sexy women sex (and on) them in what seems to be a standard set of moves in a penetrative lapdance/poledance…

That was the biggest selling point for me because…

It messes with your head.

You know body dysmorphia? Where people look in the mirror and see something other than what is actually reflected? Anorexics who see themselves as too fat or bigorexics who see themselves as too thin? Yeah…

Cardboard porn’s POV mechanics seem to replicate that in a minor way: it tricks your brain into thinking that the body of the pornstar whose POV you are viewing is actually *YOUR body*.

As a more cuddly guy (‘m a furry brrr), coming out of the immersion of being a guy with a six pack and a footlong downstairs really messes with your head.

Combine that with masturbation, and sudden desychronisation of your hand and the viewed image *super* breaks your immersion. The only thing I can liken this to is listening to Shakira in Spanish when you know the English lyrics and your brain trying to overlay the new with the old.

Also: If you’ve seen my phone recently (you stalker, you), you know that I have a problem in the form of a cracked screen. This initially really messes with your eyes and on an ongoing basis *REALLY* messes with your eyes.

Final verdict:

It is awesome. Seriously, if you can adapt to the weird sensory things, it is a really cool experience. I do however feel that 3D porn has a lot of growing still to do.

I really look forward to videos which put us in a female POV, to see what that actually does to my brain and (as a sensational sensation player) more videos which play with the senses in these ways.

I have seen a video where a robot arm holding a Tenga sleeve is synced up with the video (which has an anime girl holding a tenga sleeve because… reasons?) Which I can completely see being the next step, but if you’re paying £200 for a fucking machine, chances are you don’t really need the cardboard…

But all in all, I do think that this kind of thing is the future of porn. Online videos and erotica will never fall by the wayside, but 3D and USB toys?
